Annual End of the Year Pharmacy BBQ

April 29, 2009

Thank you to our sponsors Dr. Crowley, Dr. Ireland, the Pharmacotherapy Department, the Utah Society of Health-Systems Pharmacists (USHP), and the Alumni Association. The event was planned and organized by the Utah Student Pharmacist Alliance (USPA) student leaders. Many pharmacy and other health science students brought their families and friends out to mingle and relax on the last day of class before finals. The event was free for pharmacy students and tickets sold for $5 to other students went to support the South Valley Sanctuary. Many students took home awesome raffle prizes such as jump drives, restaurant gift cards, Lexi-Comp books, Nalgene bottles, a portable hammock, and much more. A special appreciation goes out to the phenomenal band, Same As It Never Was, that played music from the best of Talking Heads. The band includes our very own Melissa Gilmore (P2) on the keyboard! If you missed out or would like to see them play again you can catch their upcoming shows by contacting Melissa. As with all annual events, thank you to all who attended and we look forward to seeing you next year.

Annual Rho Chi Spring Egg Hunt

March 28, 2009

The annual Rho Chi Spring Egg Hunt on March 28, 2009 was a huge success. About 100 kids and their families showed up for the fun-filled Saturday. It started off with pictures with the Easter bunny. The children then scattered around and found eggs filled with sugar-free candy. As they returned from the egg hunt everyone got to pick a toy from the pile of prizes. The extra toys are scheduled to be donated to the foster kid foundation. There was face-painting, a magic show, and ballons to entertain the kids while their parents attended a diabetes education class. Dr. Laura Shane-McWhorter started the session, and Ashley Campbell, a third year pharmacy student, finished the session. Ashley was a new addition this year and did a great job! She gave a testimonial to the parents about what she wished her parents did for her when she was a young child with diabetes. The day ended with yummy lunch from Jason's Deli. About 150 lunches were left over and were donated to the Road Home Shelter. The day was great and couldn't have been successful without the awesome volunteers that showed up. Thank you to everyone who helped out!.

1st Annual Pharmacy Gala Dinner and Charity Auction

February 26, 2009

Over two hundred and fifty pharmacists, health science students, family and friends, of our student body attended the first pharmacy gala ever! The Huntsman Cancer Institute Point Restaurant was a beautiful venue. The auction items included a football signed by the UofU 13-0 BCS Buster football team, Carlos Boozer size 16 signed sneakers and so much more. There was also a caricature artist and visit by Miss Utah! Over $7,000 was raised to benefit the Maliheh Free Clinic and the Utah Student Pharmacist Alliance. Next year the event will be even bigger and better so plan on it.

Pharmacy Day on Capitol Hill

February 25, 2009

Pharmacy students and faculty from the University of Utah and University of Southern Nevada South Jordan Campus met up on capitol hill today with pharmacists from around the state.  This was our first collaborative event held between the two pharmacy schools in Utah.

Students that arrived early were given a behind the scenes tour of the capitol where we met representative and pharmacy owner Evan Vickers of Cedar City and learned more about the history of the capitol and how the legislation process (also referred to as “sausage making”) works.  We received applause from the House Representatives when Representative Evan Vickers took a “personal privilege” to honor the pharmacy students!

We also had an in-depth interview with Representatives Vickers where he discussed how he got into politics.  Did you know that there are only a handful of pharmacist legislators in the entire country and he is the first pharmacist ever in the Utah legislature? After the tour we moved into the big and beautiful rotunda and into the hustle and bustle of a regular day at the capitol.  Many demonstrators were dressed up and carrying signs.

Student came and went all day long and ran booths taking blood sugars, blood cholesterol, bone densities, asthma spirometry screenings, raising heartburn awareness, and testing blood pressures of the public, demonstrators and legislators.  The event was made possible by the Utah Pharmacists Alliance (UPhA) Reid Barker, Utah Society of Health-System Pharmacists (USHP), Associated Food Stores, USN’s NCPA chapter, and USPA.   Look for the event next session (in one year!).
