Dr. Margo Haygood, Medicinal Chemistry, joined by an international team of scientists, discover an elusive giant shipworm in the Philippines.
Haygood and her colleagues first caught wind of a possible location the giant mollusk could be hiding from a local TV station's short documentary segment. Researchers began investigating a lagoon mentioned in the segment right away and soon discovered the giant shipworm.
“I was awestruck when I first saw the sheer immensity of this bizarre animal,” says Marvin Altamia, researcher at the marine sciences institute, University of the Philippines.
This bizarre and fascinating discovery has captured eyes of the nation. The Washington Post, National Geographic and other news outlets have published this discovery featuring Dr. Haygood and her colleagues.
