2026 Dr. Jeffrey Fox Award
Molecular Pharmaceutics PhD student, Esther Need (Goel/Shi Lab), has been awarded with the 2026 Dr. Jeffrey Fox Award, an honor bestowed annually on a peer‑nominated student who exemplifies the values and mentorship legacy of the late Dr. Fox (1947-1999). Esther is recognized for her academic excellence, service to the Department and the University of Utah, and her commitment to supporting fellow students.
One of her nominators noted, “Esther has gone above and beyond to help her fellow students in diverse situations. She has been an excellent teaching assistant, a wonderful lab mate, and a great friend."
During his tenure at the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Fox mentored numerous PhD students, offering guidance that extended well beyond the classroom or laboratory. His door was always open, his advice always thoughtful, and his belief in his students unwavering. His influence continues to be felt across the department and the broader academic community.
We were delighted to include some special attendees in this year’s award presentation, including Katherine Fox, widow of Dr. Fox; Leah Fox, his daughter; and Kevin Warner, PhD ’03 and the 2001 Fox Award recipient.
This year also marks a significant milestone for the program: the Fox Award has now been formally endowed ensuring it will continue on in perpetuity, thanks to the generous support from Anil Chhettry, Kevin Warner, Katherine Fox, Leah Fox, and Cara Fox. The Jeffrey Fox Memorial Fund was first established in 1999 by Dr. Fox’s students, colleagues, family, and friends, and has recognized outstanding graduate students annually since 2000.
