AMCP exposes students to a unique area of pharmacy called managed care, which deals with developing cost-effective outcomes to serve an entire population. Managed care pharmacists help determine what medications should be covered by health insurance to ensure people are receiving the most appropriate medications.

The UU-AMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) is focused on using managed care principles to improve health care for all. The UU-AMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) is the newest student chapter at our college.  Student members can get involved in the Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Committee Local Competition.  Our chapter's best P&T team is also eligible to attend and compete at the Spring Annual Conference.  Membership also includes a subscription to the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy (JMCP) and the Daily Dose newsletter.  Student members from our local chapter have found leadership opportunities as the UU-AMCP (Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) delegate in the APhA-ASP (American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists) House of Delegates and have been selected for the competitive summer internship program.  Members are also eligible for reimbursement from our local chapter and ASUU (Associated Students of the University of Utah) to attend the Fall Educational and Spring Annual conferences.

    Managed Care Pharmacy

Managed care pharmacists serve patients and the public through the promotion of wellness and rational drug therapy by the application of managed care principles. Managed care pharmacy involves a wide range of concepts including pharmacoeconomics, drug use evaluation, disease management, and outcomes research to name a few.

Managed Care integrates the financing and delivery of appropriate health services by arrangements with selected providers to furnish a comprehensive set of health care services. Pharmacists can be involved in creating standards for the selection of health care providers and in formal programs for ongoing quality assurance and utilization review.  Pharmacists employed within managed health care organizations are responsible for a broad and diversified range of clinical, quality-oriented drug management services.

As a pharmacist, regardless of where you choose to practice, you can benefit by understanding the concepts of managed care pharmacy. Managed care pharmacy allows the practitioner to view patient care through all realms of health care - inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory care.

The mission of the APhA Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) is to be the collective voice of student pharmacists, to provide opportunities for professional growth, to improve patient care, and to advance the future of pharmacy.

APhA-ASP (American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists) was the first established chapter at our college and has the longest history of providing our students with great opportunities to develop professionally and explore the pharmacy world. Student members from our local chapter have found leadership opportunities as the Chapter VII Regional Delegate, Delegate at Large, Chapter Delegate, and National Patient Counseling Competition winner. Students that win the local patient counseling competition are eligible for a grant from the local chapter to compete nationally. Members are also eligible for reimbursement from our local chapter and ASUU to attend the Midyear Regional and Annual conferences.

NCPA is focused on promoting the role of independent community pharmacies. Our local chapter is also involved in planning the annual Pharmacy Legislative Day at the Utah State Capitol. If you are interested in community pharmacy or pharmacy advocacy and legislation, then NCPA is the right student group for you!

The Univeristy of Utah chapter of NCPA attends the annual NCPA Convention and Trade Exposition. Students can attend a number of CEs on creating an independent pharmacy business and network with current pharmacy owners from across the nation.

Our chapter competes in the annual NCPA Pruitt-Schutte Business Plan Competition. This is a unique oppotunity to design and create a comprehensive business plan that can be implemented after graduation. Any student interested in being a business owner or working in an independent pharmacy would benefit from the opportunities provided by NCPA.

Our student chapter will also organize the Pharmacy Legislative Day on Capitol Hill with our state organizations and the NCPA chapter at USN-SJ. Don't miss it!

ASHP is the organization for students with an interest in hospital and other health-systems work settings. If you want to work as a clinical pharmacist, this is the place for you!

The ASHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) is the only national organization for hospital and health-system pharmacists. As a 35,000-member national professional association representing pharmacists who practice in settings of hospital, long-term care facilities, home care, and many other health-system settings, ASHP offers students the opportunity to get involved in advocacy, continuing education, drug information, national meetings and conferences, professional policies and practice standards, publishing opportunities, as well as a multitude of residency options throughout their education and continuing into their professional careers.

Although ASHP-SSHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists) is one of the smaller chapters recognized at our college, it has an impressive history of providing our students with incredible opportunities to develop professionally and explore the large world of health-system pharmacy careers. Through ASHP-SSHP (American Society of Health-System Pharmacists), students have the opportunity to get involved with advocacy in patient care (including ASHP policy making), professional development projects, clinical skills competitions, and national meetings. Members of our student society have found leadership opportunities in our Clinical Skills Competition, professional practice policies, publishing opportunities, and, more recently, the national ASHP summer meeting has begun offering student-specific leadership programming. Winners of our clinical skills competition are eligible for a $1000 grant from the local chapter to compete nationally. Members are also eligible for reimbursement from our local chapter and ASUU to attend the Midyear Clinical Meeting in December.

The mission of ASHP is to advance and support the professional practice of pharmacists in hospitals and health systems and serve as their collective voice on issues related to medication use and public health. Here at the U of U, we focus on achieving this mission with 2 main yearly activities: the clinical skills competition and the residency showcase midyear meeting.

    Clinical Skills Competition:
This is a great chance every student has to get a feel for what clinical pharmacy is all about. A team of two students is presented a patient case and given two hours to prepare a written plan for optimizing that patient's drug therapy. Just as in a real world setting, references are available and their use is encouraged to make sure we are making recommendations based on best evidence based medicine principles available. Students then present their plan to a board of judges and are asked relevant questions about their recommendations. This mirrors the daily activities of many clinical pharmacists in hospital and ambulatory settings.

    Midyear Clinical Meeting:
At this meeting, held in December, most everyone that has a residency program to offer sets up a booth and detailing their program. Students find out about the different programs available and interview with those they are interested in. ASHP is responsible for matching students with their program based on the preferences of both the students and the residency programs. It is the place to be if you are interested in pursuing a residency after graduation.

The purpose of USPA (Utah Student Pharmacist Alliance) is to foster the professional development of student pharmacists; to enhance learning of the pharmaceutical sciences; and to promote career development and opportunity awareness.

    Objectives

To promote the pharmacy profession and the role of the pharmacist in the American health care system.

To provide information to students about career options in all areas of pharmacy including: hospital and health systems; chain store; community and independent; government and armed services; pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution; managed care; and academic and educational.

To encourage student involvement in national and state professional pharmacy organizations and to encourage students to remain involved in these organizations after graduation.

To sponsor and organize educational and service programs to strengthen students clinical knowledge, professional, business and leadership abilities.

To educate the public about health care issues and the pharmacists role in providing services to manage and control these issues.

To promote pharmaceutical research and the acquisition and dissemination of new pharmacy based knowledge.

The purpose of UUSCCP (Utah Student Chapter of ACCP) is to advance human health by extending the frontiers of clinical pharmacy. Our chapter’s main focuses include clinical pharmacy, networking, professional development, and research. We provide various of opportunities and events throughout the year to maintain these core values.

UPeds is focused on pediatric pharmacy, and empowering students to feel comfortable working with kids and on medications for kids. If you have an interest in pediatric pharmacy, then we are here for you!

The College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacists (CPNP) in an organization with the goal of including pharmacists in the care of individuals with psychiatric and neurological conditions. Our student chapter provides opportunities to network with pharmacists, learn about the pharmacist's role in psychiatric pharmacy, participate in clinical settings, and serve the community. Mental health is important in all areas of medicine and CPNP offers the opportunity to be exposed to the difference a pharmacist can make in promoting and improving mental health.

Mission Statement: Maliheh Free Clinic seeks to improve the quality of life in the Greater Salt Lake Area by providing free medical services for uninsured and low-income individuals and families to help reverse the cycle of poverty and suffering created by poor health.

The Maliheh Free Clinic offers a great learning environment for students as they are able to work within an interprofessional team (Pharm, PA, NP, Med) to workup patients presenting for their first clinic visit. As medication experts, the pharmacy student volunteers are responsible for obtaining an accurate home medication list, immunization history, and allergy history. Students are also given the opportunity to provide immunizations to those patients that consent. After an initial visit with the patient, the students share their impression and formulate a plan of action with the clinic preceptors, which is then shared with the patient as they establish care with the clinic.
