Teaching and Training Programs
The teaching and training programs of the Department include graduate level teaching, teaching in the Pharm.D. professional program, training of postdoctoral fellows, and participation in several summer research programs for local high school students and undergraduates.
Graduate student teaching by department faculty includes didactic and research training that lead to Ph.D. degrees in Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biomedical Engineering, and Neuroscience. Department faculty participate in the Biological Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Neuroscience graduate programs. Training of pharmacy students includes didactic teaching in the integrated pharmacotherapeutics, immunology, and toxicology courses of the Pharm.D. program. Department faculty also participate in training Pharm.D. students who are conducting research for their Pharm.D. research projects.
Excellence in the teaching of pharmacology is a tradition in this department, continuing the legacy of Dr. Louis Goodman, founding chair of the Department of Pharmacology in the School of Medicine, and co-author of the world famous textbook, The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, now in its 13th edition. Dr. Donald Blumenthal, Associate Professor, is extensively involved in editing this book, its online version, and a more portable version, Goodman & Gilman's Manual of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. A number of department faculty have been recognized with teaching awards in the professional and graduate programs, including Dr. Marco Bortolato, who was awarded 2018 P2 College of Pharmacy professor of the year, and Dr. Kristen Keefe who was recently awarded the University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Award.
