Overview
Among the largest bequeathments ever made to University of Utah Health by an individual, Richard Lewis Stimson’s legacy gift funds education, research, and patient care through Stimson Presidential Endowed Chairs in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedics, and College of Pharmacy.
Stimson was born and raised in Salt Lake City and attended the University of Utah in 1943 before transferring to Stanford to pursue studies in engineering. He enrolled in the Army Specialized Training program and joined the 100th Infantry Division in France. Stimson was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service in World War II. After the war and graduation from the U with a degree in business marketing, he went on to find success in the insurance industry and sales.
Stimson volunteered at U of U Health, serving weekly for over twenty years. He was a member of the University Health Sciences Council, President’s Club, and Dr. John R. Park Legacy Society. Stimson received the US President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2002 and was honored by the VFW in 2010. He passed away in July 2014.
