Dr. Joan and Dr. Hal Wolf

Established in 2000 by Drs. Harold H. and Joan S. Wolf, the Wolf Prize is the highest award the University of Utah College of Pharmacy can bestow upon a PhD student.

The Wolf Prize: The Wolf Prize recognizes excellence in teaching by doctor of philosophy (PhD) candidates from any department in the University of Utah College of Pharmacy. It is awarded to those students who have demonstrated an aptitude for and inclination toward an academic career. The prize consists of a $5,000 award. The name of the recipient is also included on a permanent plaque displayed in the College of Pharmacy.

About the Prize: Established in 2000 by Drs. Harold H. and Joan S. Wolf, the Wolf Prize is the highest award the University of Utah College of Pharmacy can bestow upon a PhD student. The Prize was created in memory of Dr. Harold Wolf’s parents, John and Bertha Wolf. Despite the significant economic deprivation of the traditional immigrant family, John and Bertha Wolf valued education highly and ensured that their children had access to it.

John Wolf (1895–1985) and Bertha Sussman Wolf (1898–1985) married in 1919. As a child, Bertha left school for factory work after the sixth grade, following her father’s death. John had arrived in the United States as an immigrant at the age of eight. With no knowledge of English, he attended first grade for two days before dropping out to go to work. Nonetheless, during more than sixty-five years of a loving marriage, John and Bertha maintained a home in which literacy and education were paramount. This award is named in honor of their formidable achievements and in grateful acknowledgment of their passion for education.

Recognized as outstanding educators, Drs. Harold and Joan Wolf enjoyed highly successful academic careers. Joan S. Wolf, PhD, is Professor Emerita in the University of Utah’s Department of Special Education. Harold H. Wolf, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology and Toxicology, and served as dean of the University of Utah College of Pharmacy from 1976 to 1989. Teaching and mentoring students were extremely meaningful activities that provided both with national recognition and great personal satisfaction. The Wolf Prize was created to distinguish and further reinforce others who have begun to know such joy.

Application Process: Nomination packet will be developed by the candidate and coordinated through the Department. The packet should include:

  • A personal statement outlining the candidate's accomplishments in teaching, research and service with a commitment to an acadmic career. Candidates who do not have a commitment to an academic career will not be considered.
  • Two letters of recommendation, one from the student's mentor and an additional letter from a faculty member in the College; and
  • Evaluations of teaching commitment and effectiveness (e.g., student and/or faculty evaluations of teaching; completion of CTLE HETS program). A faculty committee that makes a formal recommendation to the Dean will evaluate applications.

For additional information, please discuss with your department chair.
