Aug 09, 2015 - CHRIS IRELAND APPOINTED AS THE ASIA CAMPUS CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER AND ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT FOR RESEARCH

Chris Ireland 2015

With the retirement of Dr. In Suk Han as President of its Asia Campus NPO, the University of Utah is announcing a new Senior Leadership Team in Incheon effective August 15th.  In making this announcement, the University is re-emphasizing that the Asia Campus is a nationally accredited extended campus of the University of Utah.  As such, degrees offered on the Asia campus meet U.S. national accreditation standards and comply with the requirements of the Utah System of Higher Education.  All students attending the Asia Campus spend at least one year on the main campus in Salt Lake City; meet the same admissions and program degree requirements; are taught and mentored by qualified faculty appointed at the University of Utah; and will receive a University of Utah degree.  To further emphasize the alignment of the Asia Campus as simply an extension of the University of Utah led by President David W. Pershing, the new Asia Campus senior administrator in Korea will no longer use the title “President”, but is appointed as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and serve as President Pershing’s legal and administrative representative in Korea.

President Pershing and the Board of Directors for the University of Utah Asia Campus are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Chris Ireland as the Asia Campus Chief Administrative Officer and Associate Vice President for Research.  Dr. Ireland is a University of Utah Distinguished Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and the former Dean of the College of Pharmacy.  He is a researcher in the Experimental Therapeutics Program at the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City and has served as member of the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Counselors for Basic Sciences (2008-2013).  Dr. Ireland received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, San Diego, and a PhD from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, San Diego.

Two nationally recognized leaders in student services and academic affairs will join Dr. Ireland on the Asia Campus Senior Leadership Team.  Dr. Kari Ellingson comes to Korea from the main campus in Salt Lake City, and is currently University of Utah Associate Vice President for Student Development. She has been appointed as the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at the U Asia Campus, along with faculty teaching responsibilities. Dr. Ellingson is an Adjunct Associate Professor in Education, Leadership and Policy, and the former Director of the University’s Counseling Center where she was also on staff as psychologist.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Virginia, a Master of Education in Counseling, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Stephen Walston is a Professor of Public Health in School of Medicine at the University of Utah, and serves as the Asia Campus Vice President for Academic Affairs.  Prior to coming to Korea, he served as a Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Oklahoma’s School of Public Health, Department of Health Administration and Policy for ten years. Dr. Walston earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University. Dr. Walston specializes in healthcare strategy, organizational development, and leadership.

This new leadership team will be building on a solid foundation established this past year by the Asia campus faculty and staff, and the University of Utah administration in Salt Lake City.  To further strengthen this foundation, the campus leadership is bringing together a Korean Advisory Council of business and education leaders, national and local government officials, NGO’s, and University of Utah alumni living in Korea who will work hand-in-hand with the Asia Campus to offer students the highest quality college experience available anywhere in the world, as well as develop a major research enterprise within Incheon and the Songdo International City. The Council will meet on a regular basis to provide input and recommendations on the vitality of the Asia Campus academic, student life, and research programs.

The University of Utah looks forward to continued success as the Asia Campus classes for the fall 2015 semester begin on August 31st under the new leadership.

Dec 31, 2015 - RANDALL T. PETERSON NEW DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF PHARMACY

Randall Peterson 2016

Randall T. Peterson, Ph.D., will assume his role as dean and L.S. Skaggs Presidential Endowed Chair for Pharmacy Jan. 1, 2017.

Peterson is a Salt Lake City native, he earned his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from Brigham Young University and his Ph.D. in biochemistry from Harvard University. He is the current Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Associate Professor of Basic Science at Harvard Medical School, scientific director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cardiovascular Research Center and a senior associate member of the Broad Institute.

Peterson and his colleagues were the first to use an animal model, the zebrafish, to model human diseases and then rapidly identify small molecule drug candidates for cardiovascular and nervous system disorders. Several compounds discovered by his lab are used as research tools or are preclinical drug candidates.

Peterson is a principal investigator or co-investigator on numerous National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants, including a current $12 million award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to establish a Center of Excellence to develop novel pharmaceutical countermeasures for cyanide exposure. He was the principal investigator on a prestigious National Institute of Mental Health EUREKA grant to develop psychotropic drugs using zebrafish models. EUREKA grants encourage exceptionally innovative research to accelerate scientific progress.

An inventor on numerous patents, Dr. Peterson has served as a scientific advisor to companies including Montigen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Tolero Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is also involved in national conversations about the future of precision medicine, a key part of the University of Utah Health Sciences strategy to improve health care. Peterson recently co-chaired the second annual international Zebrafish for Personalized/Precision Medicine Conference.

The College of Pharmacy’s outstanding research and academic programs and the world-class reputation of the University of Utah Health Sciences as a whole made Utah an attractive place for Peterson to expand his research and academic career. Peterson’s expertise is well suited to lead the College of Pharmacy, which ranks fifth in the nation for NIH research funding.

"I am delighted to join the College of Pharmacy and the University’s effort to improve the lives of people in Utah and far beyond through pioneering research and clinical advances,” he said. “This mission is particularly close to my heart, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to continue the College of Pharmacy’s trajectory as a leading innovator in the research, teaching, and clinical practice of the pharmaceutical sciences.”

"Dr. Peterson is uniquely qualified to lead the College of Pharmacy to new heights of innovation as we work to develop personalized drug therapies,” said Health Sciences Senior Vice President Vivian Lee, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A. “He is also well-prepared to train our students in the skills they will need to advance the clinical practice of pharmacy, ultimately improving the health of our communities."

Lee extended special thanks to Pharmacology and Toxicology Professor Kristen Keefe, Ph.D., for her service as our interim dean since June of 2014. Keefe has agreed to continue to serve until the end of 2016.

"We owe Dr. Keefe an enormous debt of gratitude for her skilled leadership and passionate dedication to the college," said Lee. "During her tenure, she has continued to drive the college forward, and the college's NIH funding ranks it among the top five in the nation. Dr. Keefe worked diligently and ably to lead the College in its development of both a strategic research and funding plan for the school."
