Tosifa Memon Recognized as 'Molecular Pharmacology' Highlighted Trainee Author
Tosifa Memon has been named the Molecular Pharmacology Highlighted Trainee Author for the April 2019 issue. Dr. Memon is a post-doctoral trainee with the University of Utah College of Pharmacy, under the mentorship of Dr. Christopher A. Reilly. The Molecular Pharmacology article that earned her selection as a Highlighted Trainee Author is titled “trans-Anethole of Fennel oil is a selective and non-electrophilic agonist of the TRPA1 ion channel”, and is available at https://doi.org/10.1124/mol.118.114561.
Dr. Memon’s areas of research are in natural product discovery and molecular pharmacology of transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels, and roles of these channels in regulating the pro-inflammatory effects of inhaled irritants. She is currently working on investigating molecular targets for distinct components of air pollutants that promote pneumotoxicity via TRP channels. In addition, she is testing novel TRP ligands as potential therapeutics in models of lung inflammation.
The anticipated impact of Dr. Memon’s current research is that the discovery of natural TRP agonists and/or antagonists may prove beneficial in both elucidating the physiological and pathophysiological roles of TRP channels in the airway.
When not in the lab, Tosifa enjoys traveling as well as hiking and camping in the state and national parks of Utah.
