Profiles in Pharmacy #5 - Alice Olsen: Veterinary Pharmacist
Alice Olsen, PharmD, originally envisioned becoming a veterinarian because of her love for animals. After receiving her PharmD degree instead, she realized that she didn't have to sacrifice her involvement with animals for her career. Combining pharmacy with veterinary medicine, becoming a veterinary pharmacist was the clear choice for Dr. Olsen. As the Lead Pharmacist at Meds for Vets, Dr. Olsen oversees a veterinary compounding lab that formulates and delivers specialty medicine to animals across the nation.
Veterinary pharmacy is still a relatively small specialty, but Dr. Olsen is noticing it gaining more exposure. Her advice to students who are interested in the field is to do well in their program, and seek out specialty training sites, electives, and rotations relating to the field. It can be a rewarding career for those who want to help animals live fantastic lives.
"Profiles in Pharmacy" is a series highlighting the people and careers of the pharmacy discipline.
