The 18th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Systems 2022: A Tribute to the Late Sung Wan Kim
From February 22 – 24 the Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Chemistry hosted the 18th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Systems 2022: A Tribute to the Late Sung Wan Kim.
This special event was a tribute to the late Dr. Sung Wan Kim (who passed away in February 2020) – a giant in the area of drug and gene delivery, Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Bioengineering, and the founder of the RADDS Symposium. The first International Symposium on Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Systems took place in 1983 in Park City and was moved to Salt Lake City from the second event. RADDS one of the earliest conferences in the area of drug delivery, always attracted the top scientists in the field. Oral presentations are by invitation only and organizers always devote significant effort to represent the best science in the drug delivery area. From the 6th symposium onward, posters were included to encourage the participation of young scientists. The 17th meeting took place in 2015.
The 18th International Symposium was held at the Salt Lake City Marriott University Park, and featured 34 invited speakers as well as remarks from Vice President for Research Erin Rothwell, Dean, College of Pharmacy Randall Peterson, and Hamid Ghandehari, Professor and Chair, Pharmaceutics & Pharmaceutical Chemistry. The event was fully hybrid, with both in-person and virtual speakers, poster presenters, and attendees. The full list of talk titles can be found here.
After the event opened with a Welcome Reception on February 22, the remaining two days of the conference featured talks on recent advances in drug delivery. Speakers represented the United States, Canada, South Korea, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, and China.
On the evening of February 23 there was a dinner celebrating the life and legacy of Dr. Kim, which included remarks from friends and colleagues sharing their memories, including from Dr. Kim’s children. It was a very special evening full of laughs, tears, and remembrances. We are so grateful for these long-time friends of Dr. Kim’s for coming and sharing their stories!
