Shawn Owen named co-director of BC/MB Program
We are excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Shawn Owen (Molecular Pharmaceutics) and Dr. Jason Shepherd (Neurobiology) as the new directors of the Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology PhD Programs at the University of Utah. Starting July 1, 2025, they will lead these dynamic and innovative programs, fostering the next generation of scientists. Both Shawn and Jason have been integral members of the Bioscience community and are deeply committed to the academic and professional development of our graduate students. Their leadership will further enhance the collaborative, interdisciplinary environment that defines these programs.
The Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology PhD Programs are designed for students who want to explore the intersection of chemistry, biology, and medicine. Students choose from over 90 faculty members across diverse departments, including Biochemistry, Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Molecular Pharmaceutics, Oncological Sciences, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and the School of Biological Sciences. These faculty members represent a wide range of scientific disciplines, applying chemical or physical approaches to address biological problems. After the first year, students formally join one of these departments to continue their thesis research in the lab of a faculty member, allowing them to focus on cutting-edge research in their area of interest.
Under the leadership of Dr. Owen and Dr. Shepherd, the Biological Chemistry and Molecular Biology program look forward to continued growth and success. Congratulations to the new directors!
