University of Utah Hospital and Clinics- Outpatient Pharmacy is now hiring a Pharmacy Intern!   

Outpatient Pharmacy has many diverse opportunities that are not offered at other locations such as:  

  • Delivering and counseling patients on new medications to discharge from the hospital.
  • Filling medications from specialty clinics allowing counseling and familiarity with medication therapies not seen frequently.
  • Working closely and having easy access to providers for questions.
  • Working with a variety of departments and building relationships across the hospital system.
  • Opportunities to administer vaccinations frequently
  • Opportunities to learn and become familiar with Outpatient and Inpatient functions of Epic (one of the largest electronic medical record systems).

 This would be a great opportunity for motivated students that are wanting to increase their application of skills learned in the classroom!  Outpatient Pharmacy is less than a 10 minute walk from the College of Pharmacy, so no need to worry about commuting from class to get to work. Scheduling is flexible, most shifts will be weekends and closing, allowing flexibility with class schedules.  

Required Qualifications:  

Current Utah State Pharmacy Intern Licensure

 Preferred Qualifications:

  1. First year pharmacy student. Second year pharmacy student applications will be considered as well.
  2. Prior pharmacy technician or intern experience

UUH Redwood Pharmacy is currently hiring two intern positions

UUH Redwood Pharmacy is currently hiring two intern positions. The positions offers flexible hours mainly during afternoons, evenings and weekends. The positions are 0.5 FTE and 0.05 FTE.  The 0.5 FTE is 20 hours per week and the 0.05FTE is a prn position but averages between 10-12 hours per week. The pharmacy is situated within Redwood Health Center, one of the busiest community clinics for University of Utah Health. The clinic offers services including internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, and urgent care. Redwood Health Center is also unique in that we serve a large immigrant and refugee population. You will have the opportunity to work with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Intern responsibilities include counseling patients, administering vaccinations, communicating with providers, collaborating with technicians and pharmacists on taking, inputting, processing and filling prescriptions. This is a great experience to help hone your counseling and patient communication skills. Pharmacist Intern

Job Description

The pharmacy student (intern) assists pharmacists to provide pharmacy services including the evaluation and input of licensed independent practitioner orders/prescriptions, and the technical functions of drug procurement, preparation, and distribution. These and all other duties are completed under the supervision of a pharmacist. Expectation: Become proficient in pharmacy technical functions and the basic pharmacology and utilization of medications.

Essential Job Duties

  • Provides excellent service to patients, pharmacists, interns, technicians, and other healthcare professionals in the areas of responsibility.
  • Communicates effectively with all staff regarding responsibilities and identified concerns.
  • Provides patient education/counseling under the direct supervision of the pharmacist on staff as training and mentoring permits.
  • Is training to become competent and effective in technical responsibilities assigned, and seeks appropriate training and peer feedback on routine responsibilities.
  • Understands and is compliant to all state and federal laws, regulations, policies and procedures, and guidelines related to their specific area of practice.
  • Participates and supports the fiscal responsibilities of the department, facility, and Intermountain Healthcare as a whole.
  • Provides delivery of medications, information and/or service in a professional, timely manner and is actively engaged in department and team goals, activities, and projects.
  • Consistently attains appropriate supervision and accuracy checks by the pharmacist(s) on staff when working, understanding that the pharmacist is the supervisor of their activities.
  • Participates in quality improvement activities, and constantly seeks a team approach to developing and achieving best practices and processes.

Posting Specifics

  • Benefits Eligible: No
  • Shift Details: 8 hours a week average.  This shift will be a weekend day shift (Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 AM - 5:30 PM) every 3rd weekend. It will also be a 4 hour evening shift every 3rd week (Approximately 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM)
  • Department: Inpatient Pharmacy department at American Fork Hospital.

Minimum Requirements

  •  Current state Pharmacy Intern license.
  • Must be accepted/enrolled in an accredited College of Pharmacy.

Physical Requirements

  •  Carrying, hearing/listening, lifting, manual dexterity, pulling/pushing, seeing.

Preferred Requirements

  • Pharmacy tech experience.
  • Previous hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Would consider either 1st year pharmacy student or 2nd year pharmacy student.
  • Excellent communication.
